Tip # 1: Play Fewer Hands And Play Aggressively

Play Poker Aggressively

There is a limit to how many starting hands you can play before the flop in No Limit Texas Hold’em. Even for the world’s best players. If you try to play too many hands you will exhaust. Your stack of chips (unless luck is on your side).

Developing a solid preflop poker strategy is by far the easiest and fastest way to increase your profits. However, while developing a solid preflop range is relatively. Easy to do (such as by downloading our free preflop chart) having the discipline to stick with it is tough. Don’t allow yourself to become impatient and play a game that isn’t worth playing.

The best approach is to play a variety of strong and/or playable hands. And you should play those hands aggressively. Playing all your hands aggressively, including more speculative ones. Such as 7 ♠ 6 ♠ or 5 ♥ 5 ♣, allows you to disguise your true hand strength.

When you raise, your opponent won’t know if you have AA. AK, or 7-6, which makes you very tough to fight. Tight and aggressive winning the game!

Tip # 2: Don’t Be The First Lame Player

Limping (just calling the big blind preflop) is an absolute no-no as the first player to enter the pot. There are two main reasons why this game should be avoided:

  1. You can’t win the pre-flop pot like you can if you raise.
  2. You give the players behind a very attractive pot opportunity. Making it more likely that you face multiple players and thus less chance of you winning the pot.

The only acceptable situation for limping is when at least one other player has limped. This is called over-limping, and it can be a good game. Because you get a huge pot chance of joining the action. So you can achieve something good by flop, hopefully.

Tip # 3: Semi-Bluff Be Aggressive With Your Draw Results

If you want to really crush poker, you need to bluff effectively. But bluffing ineffectively is one of the fastest ways to lose your bankroll on the table. So how do you control your bluffing frequency?

The most effective way to bluff is to let your cards be dictated whether you will bluff or not. This means bluffing with the hand that has an outs to raise to the best hand on the next street. Such as a straight draw, an even draw, or even just an extra card or two to the board.

Think of this raffle as your back-up plan in case your bluff is called.

Poker players call these hands “semi-bluff” because of their potential beyond the bluff itself. You can learn more about semi-bluffing here.

When you’re just starting out, bluffing without hands prior to the river. Is discouraged (except in one situation I’ll talk about in a moment).

Tip # 4: Quickly-Play Your Strong Hand to Build a Pot and Make More Money

What a sad sight when a player checks their flipped nut flush three times. And then has to awkwardly have their poker monster table hand as their opponent re-checks the river. Playing slow too often is a common mistake among players. Who are afraid to chase their opponent out of the pot when they have a strong poker hand.

In most cases, it is best to bet your strong hand to build pots and protect your equity. That doesn’t mean you should always bet / raise your strong hand after the flop. You can check your strong hand if:

  • There’s no way you will lose.
  • There aren’t many scare cards to keep you from getting paid in later walks.
  • Your opponent’s range is heavily weighted towards the hand regardless of combat value.

When you’re feeling uncertain, however, just bet (or check for raises if you’re not a preflop aggressor). Yes, it is disappointing when your opponent folds, but it doesn’t disappoint like losing or losing potential value.

Tip # 5: Maintain Your Big Blindness (Right Handed)

Bluff strategi

The big blind is a special position because you have already invested 1 big blind in the pot. For this reason, any time you are faced with a raise while sitting in the big blind. You will have a better chance of the pot being called. Than any other position think of it as a discount.

Due to your discount and the fact that you are the last person to act preflop. You can call with more hands profitably than if you sat in any other position. It’s not that you should call raises with junk hands like 9 ♠ 5 ♦. But more limited hands like K ♣ 9 ♦ and Q ♥ 6 ♥ can be played in many situations.

How far you go depends on many factors – here are four main ones:

  1. Lifting position (playing tighter against the starting position and looser against the late position).
  2. Number of players on hand (when 1 or more players have called up raises. Play tighter and only call with hands that do well in multiway pots).
  3. Increase size (the bigger the bet size, the tighter you should play and vice versa).
  4. Stack size (when the pile is short, play fewer speculative hands and prioritize high card strength).

There are other important factors too, such as how often your opponent will continue betting after the flop. But the above three are the main ones you should consider.

Tip # 6: Fold When You’re Not Sure

Fold When You’re Not Sure

Want to know the biggest difference between bad players and professional players? It is the ability of good players to lay down good hands. Like the top pair when they think they are beaten.

This sounds really simple, but it’s really hard to do in practice partly. Because of the way our brains are constructed. We are naturally curious and we naturally want to win. When we fold, we give up our chance of winning the pot. And we can’t satisfy our curiosity by figuring out what our opponent has.

Calling too often and under the wrong circumstances is the second fastest way to lose at poker (after ineffective bluffs). Whenever you’re unsure whether to call or cancel versus bet or raise, do the service yourself and fold.

Pro Tip: When you fold in one of these situations, make sure you note down the details of the hand. So you can try to figure out if you made the right crease after your session. Studying and/or discussing these kinds of hands is a great way. To consistently improve your skills and fill in the gaps in your poker knowledge.

Tip # 7: Attack When Opponent Displays Weakness

Players don’t check with a hand that can call multiple bets as often as they should. That is, when they do check they usually have a relatively weak hand. Which will often fold if faced with a lot of bets. This is the “bluff for nothing” situation I alluded to earlier.

When your opponents show a lot of weaknesses in the head-up pot (like if they check flop and turn). You can take advantage of them with an aggressive bluffing strategy and should not only bet with the usual semi-bluff. Also bet as pure bluff without hands, ideally one that has a good blocking effect.

Tip # 8: Play Solid Poker Early in a Tournament and Don’t Worry About Survival

Don't Worry About Survival

There is a time and place for pile preservation, and the start of a poker tournament is not it. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of tournament poker strategy.

Consider that in order to finish the money. You must at least double or double your initial stack (usually a lot more). Instead of playing defensively, you need to play solid and aggressive poker. From the start to build up your long-term stack.

If you find yourself short on cash and close to a money bubble or payout jump. Only then should you start using a more survival-oriented style of play. You can learn more about an important part of this tournament strategy here.

Tip # 9: Play Only If You Feel Like It

Poker should be an enjoyable experience, regardless of whether you play as a hobby. Or if you are a professional player. You’ll do your best when you’re happy. So it only makes sense to only play this mental intensive game when you feel like it.

If you feel frustrated, exhausted, or build up of anger, you should exit the session right away. You may very well save a lot of money doing so. Poker will still be there tomorrow.

Pro Tip: Before I played the session, I imagined going all-in and losing my full stack first hand. If the thought of that possibility doesn’t bother me. I know I’m ready to play my A-games for a long session. But if going all-in and losing one of my buy-ins outright sounded unbearable, I would reconsider playing.

Tip # 10: Only Play Good Games

If you can’t see the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are.

This is as true today as when Mike McDermott (played by Matt Damon) said it in Rounders (1998). If you want to play poker and win, you have to play against players who are weaker than you.

Think of it this way: If you were the 9th best poker player in the world. You would be the best player at almost any table. But if you join a table with 8 players who are better than you, you become a sucker.

You should always put yourself in the position where the chances of winning are greatest. This is why it is important to leave your ego behind when playing poker.

The bottom line is that you usually have to be better than half the players at the table. If you want to have a positive win rate. And if you want to make a good profit, you want to play against the worst players you can find.

Here is a checklist for good poker games:

✔️ At least one player limps regularly.
✔️ There are many multiway pots.
✔️ Very infrequent or very frequent re-appointments.

If you’re in a game with these 2+ boxes checked, you’re in a great position to make some money. If none of these boxes are checked. Get up and find a more profitable table (unless you want to test your poker strategy).

If you play poker online, make sure you take advantage of the table statistics provided by most poker sites. Choose an online poker table with a high average pot size and a high percentage of players seeing the flop. This is the main online poker strategy that new players usually miss.
